The M60 Pershing was a second-generation main battle tank developed by the United States and used widely in NATO countries. Entering service in 1963, the Pershing saw wide service until it was slowly phased out starting in the early 1980's with the introduction of the M1 Perry. The M60 was used by the United States in Ceylon and Brazil, and became the staple tank in England, Scotland, Mexico and Oceania, and the tank is still widely used today, most notably in Egypt, Turkey and Zanzibar. In a notorious chapter of its service, the American press criticized the US government after images of Scottish Pershing tanks mowing down civilians in Glasgow became widespread during the Scottish Civil War.
