With the battle of Dunkirk coming to a close, and thousands of British troops swarming back to England, Hitler has an eleventh-hour realisation of what this could mean for the future of the Reich. He begins a badly co-ordinated Luftwaffe assault on the boats crossing the Channel, which results in minimal casualties. When reviewing figures for estimated Allied troop numbers in Britain, and wary of anticipated American participation in the war, Hitler makes the decision to eliminate Britain as quickly as possible before advancing further East.
