Perhaps the most common element in Zhell mythology was the belief that the universe began when a colossal being called Ma-wa divided its own body to form the various parts of the cosmos. His own dying breath survived and became a power that the Zhells called qa. Those that lived harmoniously with qa would live in a glorious afterlife. There were thousands of gods found in Zhell mythology with different levels of power. Although they were superior to Zhellkind, they were still bound by the rules of qa. It was said that they would often appear to Zhellkind in mortal form and do amazing miracles.

Shortly after Palpatine took over, most Zhell religious texts were destroyed as they were considered to be leftovers from a primitive superstitious civilization. A few were rescued and taken to isolated planets in the Outer Rim Territories. The Mandalorians themselves managed to preserve Zhell texts, believing the Zhells were among the greatest warriors in the Galaxy and had much wisdom to show to younger generations. One of the later Zhell documents, the Bhak Rasoma, predicted that a change in qa would bring about a great plague that would affect all Zhellkind and the gods would protect the small few with no moral taint so that they would repopulate the world. When The Blight occured around 170,000 ABY, a few became convinced that the prophecy was being fulfilled.
