The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. He also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities to lead witnesses or offenders into offering the actual facts of the case, as known only to them. Within the Bureau, Patrick Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. Patrick Jane's role in cracking a series of tough high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents. However, no-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon openly resists having Patrick Jane in her unit and alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Patrick Jane's usefulness and blasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous lack of boundaries. He is a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who uses his keen powers of observation, deduction, and knowledge of social engineering to aid in investigations (and occasionally take the lead). Before the series started, Jane's wife and daughter were murdered by serial killer Red John. For the majority of Season 1, Jane is primarily motivated by his desire to find Red John and avenge his family, even though he hasn't yet succeeded. He is the most notorious serial killer of the state of California, a sociopath who has murdered at least 41 people (and many more by proxies); and a criminal mastermind who leads a net of followers and accomplices that he uses to commit and cover up his crimes. Red John's murder of Patrick Jane's wife and daughter 5 years prior the start of the series was the reason that prompted Jane to leave his old life as a mentalist and enlist in the CBI to find and take revenge against his family's killer; kicking off the events of the series as a result. She is portrayed by Robin Tunney and is a senior agent in the fictional California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She is designated as the special agent in charge (SAC) or "boss," giving her complete responsibility and control over any investigation that her team is assigned. Lisbon first met Jane when he came to the CBI to get information about the serial killer Red John. Though showing compassion for him and his loss, she was at first annoyed by his behaviour, but seems to accept the fact he joined the team, after Minelli offered him a job. Lisbon cares deeply about Jane and even though he constantly gets her in trouble because of his reckless and questionable behaviour, they formed a close friendship and she even developed feelings for him. She is married with former fellow CBI Special Agent Wayne Rigsby and has a daughter with him named Maddy. After the dismantling of the CBI, she and Rigsby opened a private business dedicated to the investigation of computer frauds. Following the events of White as the Driven Snow, she and her husband decided to retire from law enforcement and left the series. He is a very serious person who always follows cases "by the book" like Teresa Lisbon, as opposed to Jane's unique take on investigations. He mainly acts as the interrogator, because he is very persuasive and an excellent listener. He had a very beautiful girlfriend, who appeared in episode Blood In, Blood Out, where we learn a lot about his past. He has unsuspected skills as a ladies' man which he displays in the episode Crimson Casanova. He's always careful with his money and is a bit superstitious, as we see in the episode Red Rum. He is portrayed by Owain Yeoman and is a senior agent of the fictional California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He also provides expertise over arson-related cases, having had previous experience in an arson investigation unit. He is described being calm in the face of a crisis but he is not one to be angered. He is a Iraq war veteran of African-American descent. He made his first appearance in the sixth season episode The Great Red Dragon. She is described as an intelligent and attractive, 30 something year old ex-homicide detective from Dallas who is not afraid to stand up for herself. She will have a deep impact on Jane's life.
