  • Villain (マジェコンヌ, Majekon'nu) is a recurring enemy type in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. Enemies under this type have been present since Hyperdimension Neptunia but no proper name was established until Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory. The name is a bit misleading as not all game antagonists go under this type. If going by the Japanese name which is 'Majekon'nu' which is also Arfoire's Japanese name, this category could technically be considered 'Arfoire' instead of 'Villain.' That is why Arfoire and Arfoire related enemies such as the Arfoire Syndicate of International Crime members fall under this type.

A villain (also known in film and literature as the "antagonist," "baddie", "bad guy", or "black hat") is an "evil" character in a story, whether a historical narrative or, especially, a work of fiction. The villain usually is the antagonist (though can be the protagonist), the character who tends to have a negative effect on other characters. A female villain is sometimes called a villainess (often to differentiate her from a male villain). Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines villain as "a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; scoundrel; or a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot".

  • A villain is a Bad Guy. Villains generally do Bad Things to Good People, and occasionally to Bad People, too. Compare with antagonist; contrast with hero. Depending on their degree of evil, villains may commit a variety of crimes from the petty to the disgusting. The villain therefore could appear twice: once in the opening of the story, and a second time as the person sought out by the hero. When a character performed only these acts, the character was a pure villain. Various villains also perform other functions in a fairy tale; a witch who fought the hero and ran away, and who lets the hero follow her, is also performing the task of "guidance" and thus acting as a helper.

  • Villain was a pirate ship captained by Nami.
  • In Daventry, only villains are usually concerned more with wealth than anything else.
  • None of these acts necessarily occurs in a fairy tale, but when any of them do, the character that performs the act is the villain. The functions could also be spread out among several characters. If a dragon acted as the villain, but was killed by the hero, another character (such as the dragon's sisters) might take on the role of the villain and pursue the hero. Two other characters could appear in roles that are villainous in the more general sense. One is the false hero: this character is always villainous, presenting a false claim to be the hero that must be rebutted for the happy ending. Among these characters are Cinderella's stepsisters, chopping off parts of their feet to fit on the shoe. Another character, the dispatcher, sends a hero on his quest. This might be an innocent request, to fulfil a legitimate need, but the dispatcher might also, villainously, lie to send a character on a quest in hopes of being rid of him.
  • A villain is a Bad Guy. Villains generally do Bad Things to Good People, and occasionally to Bad People, too. Compare with antagonist; contrast with hero. Depending on their degree of evil, villains may commit a variety of crimes from the petty to the disgusting. A few follow some sort of code of honour, while others are completely without morals, and some are intelligent – perhaps to the point of being geniuses – while others are terminally stupid. Some Mary Sues have villains as Lust Objects. Being in love with them usually involves downplaying their evil deeds, claiming they are "just misunderstood," and woobifying them in order to "reform" them. If they're not pretty to begin with, the Sue may give them a makeover a la her rose-colored glasses and/or go on at length about inner beauty and how nobody else is wise enough to see it. Very occasionally, the Sue's pure love is literally all it takes to turn them from the path of darkness. Villains frequently subject to this treatment include Judge Frollo, Jareth, Loki, the Phantom of the Opera, Sephiroth, Sweeney Todd, and Lord Voldemort. The true poster boy for victims of reformer Sues, however, is probably Severus Snape. While not necessarily a villain per se, he is mean, nasty, and ugly; the few positive traits he expresses are rooted in envy and selfishness. Yet, the fandom can't seem to resist putting him in a sympathetic light, even going so far as to recast his greasy hair as "naturally shiny." When something like that happens, you know you're dealing with an OC who's not playing with a full deck.
