He served as an Alliance Marine for around a year before he was offered to partake in the Interplanetary Combatives Training program in Brazil. After completing the first course and being given the 'N1' designation, he went on to return to the program, leading training teams on off-world exercises on Ceres, Phobos, Ganymede, and Titan. In 2178, after training rigorously, he was awarded the 'N6' designation and attached to the 142nd Infantry Division, and was shipped out to the Terminus systems to combat pirates and other threats. It was here that he served in an admirable and effective fashion, gaining the coveted N7 designation and a transfer to the frigate SSV Banquan, one of several Alliance vessels that the 142nd was attached too. In 2180, the Banquan was present for a massive pirate raid on the colony of New Ensley. Deploying alongside the rest of the marines present, Collins witnessed several other shuttles shut down by the pirate vessels. Upon landing, he and his team were immediately set up by the raiders, who quickly killed several members of his squad. After managing to find a defensible position, they were forced to hold out for several hours. Running low on thermal clips, Collins had to rely on his Incinerate power to keep the pirates at bay, long enough for him to grab unused clips from the dead fighters. After four hours of constant fighting, Collins and what was left of his squad were saved by the timely intervention of Alliance reinforcements, sent by the rest of the 142nd. The pirates were driven from the planet two weeks later, though not without substantial casualties; over three thousand civilians and two hundred and sixty two marines were killed in the fighting, including most of Collin's squad. This deeply affected him, and he requested to only be sent on covert missions, where he wouldn't have to be present at the frontlines, and although many questioned this and viewed it as cowardly, he excelled at his new task, rarely returning with any significant casualties. In 2183, with the start of the Eden Prime War, Collins was transferred to the SSV Libreville, an Alliance frigate, and home to the newly formed Katzbalger Squad, a team composed entirely of N7 graduates. After the Eden Prime War, they were given the new duty of watching over the diplomat, Valerie Olinna, who was granted the use of the Libreville as a diplomatic vessel, much to the ire of the crew and Katzbalger alike, who viewed the diplomat and her methods with contempt. When the Reaper War broke out three years later, in 2186, the Libreville was returned to active military duty, and Collins and Katzbalger took part in many important battles of the war, stopping Reaper advances on several different worlds.
