If a current carrying conductor with current flowing from south to north is placed over a magnetic needle, the needle gets deflected westward. This is known as the SNOW rule: S:South(direction from which current emerges) N:North(direction to which the current is headed) O:Over(the magnetic needle) W:West(direction of deflection of needle)
