Merak Vylanthor was an admiral in the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire who served during the Galactic Civil War with distinction. However, in 4 ABY, after the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader over Endor, he became one of the first warlords. Vylanthor was in command of a fleet stationed in the Outer Rim Territories, which he used to conquer several sectors and create his own kingdom, the "Crimson Command". It was primarily based in the Sarin sector, in which Vylanthor made his fortress, on Santarine. As a warlord, Vylanthor ruled with an iron fist, and had thousands drafted into his military.

In 7 ABY, after the New Republic conquered Coruscant from the Empire, they went on a campaign to eradicate the warlords in the Outer Rim. Vylanthor's fortress world, Santarine, was besieged and eventually captured, after a battle which lasted several days. The admiral himself took out a pistol when his palace was being stormed and led a charge of Imperial shock troopers, being killed during the charge.
