- R.E.M. appeared in the episode "Homer the Moe", wherein they are hired to play at Homer's improvised bar, set up after one of the renovations of Moe's Tavern turns it so trendy, Homer and his friends stop attending it. At the end of the episode, Homer sings his own rendition of "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)", one of their signature songs, known for its rapid-fire lyrics (hence the humorous spin Homer puts on them, complete with his trademark insult to Ned Flanders). The song "Superman" was featured in the episode "Million Dollar Abie."

- The lead singer of the band and sometime grandmother of Michael Chiklis is the founder member of the non-fictional (I swear) Blue Man Group. Born with blue skin around his eyes, he had struggled for some time with his blueness, and from an early age chose to cover his face with skin-colored makeup. Presently, he is no longer ashamed of the blue skin around his eyes, and displays it proudly in all the bands concerts (all four of them).

- They performed "Furry Happy Monsters," in Sesame Street’s 30th Season. The song, a parody version of their hit "Shiny Happy People," appears on the Songs from the Street CD set. They also appeared in the celebrity version of "Sing" on Episode 3851. Michael Stipe has said in interviews, the night before he was going to perform on the Sesame set, he had horrible nightmares and couldn't sleep. He was in a terrible mood the morning of the shoot until the Muppeteers started talking to him in character with their puppets.
