A military dictatorship is a form of government wherein the political power resides with the military. It is similar but not identical to a stratocracy, a state ruled directly by the military. A military dictatorship may have political rather than military leaders where they are appointed and kept in place by the military. Like any dictatorship, a military dictatorship may be official or unofficial. It consequently may not actually qualify as stratocratic. Mixed forms also exist, wherein the military exerts a very strong influence without being entirely dominant.

  • A Military dictatorship is a system of government within which the state is synonymous with the military, usually due to the Chief of Staff serving as the Head of State or otherwise the most powerful figure in the government. A common variation of a military dictatorship is a military junta, where a number of renowned Generals or other senior military figures rule as a committee. Such a junta may function as a legislative and executive body, as an executive body or purely as the cabinet of ministers for the dictator.
  • A military dictatorship was a form of government run by the military, with no input from the citizenry. The Klingon Empire was a prime example of this form of government. While destroying a military dictatorship was not always possible, organized resistance could produce favorable results; history offered many examples of this. In 2267, James T. Kirk and Spock detonated a munitions dump outside Kor's headquarters. Later, the captain explained that he had done it to prove a point, encouraging the Organian Council of Elders to sabotage their Klingon occupiers even if they couldn't mount a full-scale war against them just yet. (TOS: "Errand of Mercy" ) In 2372, hearing of Admiral Leyton's plan to depose Federation President Jaresh-Inyo and set up a Starfleet-run government instead, Benjamin Sisko asked him if he really thought that other Federation worlds would just sit back and let their president be replaced by a military dictatorship. Leyton scoffed at the idea. (DS9: "Paradise Lost")
