The city once served as the main rendezvous point for the Strathclydian Armed Forces, whose base several miles northeast of Kilmarnock contained the only airstrip in the entire country (there was no civilian airport in Strathclyde). The original city was destroyed during the months of anarchy following the collapse of the world economy beginning on 21 December 2012. On 8 August 2013, General M Mazur proclaimed the People's Democratic Soviet Republic of Strathclyde on the site of the ancient city's ruins. Shortly afterwards, the new communist government of Strathclyde began a massive reconstruction project, eventually resulting in the relocation of vast numbers of people from Glasgow and the countryside to the city.
