Alternate realities, or parallel universes, are a concept that stems from Hugh Everett's many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. It is believed there are an infinite number of different realities, some more similar than others. Sometimes there are the same people, places, and objects, but with notable differences.

  • Alternate Reality is the presence (or generation) of an alternate universe/reality (or realities in some cases) inside one's mind, along with the ability interact with these realities (which take up different frequencies of the mind); this mindscape is manipulated to the user's desires, if it is within their own mind. Or is shaped by the subconscious of those that are trapped within the world, inside another mind. The chief aspect of this ability is that one possessing this ability is capable of pulling others into it, trapping them there.

  • When two or more outcomes occur as consequence of an event, each outcome can be considered an alternate reality, possibly explained by the fact that some events occur in different timelines or universes. The contradictory events can be considered as alternate timelines (if they are a result of time travel), or as alternate universes (when probability and quantum mechanics make things unfold differently without any travel through time occurring).
  • An alternate reality (which may also be referred to as an alternate quantum reality, alternate timeline or parallel timeline) is a divergent timeline, a distinct branch in any one universe. The terms "alternate universe" or "parallel universe" are sometimes also used to refer to alternate realities, however such usage is inaccurate; a universe is a distinct separate place, divided from other universes by higher dimensions (and may have its own alternate timelines), while an alternate reality is merely a different quantum facet of any one universe, with the same laws of physics, just different histories.
