Konsola była bardzo krótko na rynku między innymi przez powstanie PlayStation 2. Została wycofana w 2001 w Ameryce, w 2002 w Europie i Australii oraz w 2007 w Japonii. W tej sytuacji, Sega zaprzestała tworzenie konsol. Co ciekawe, przed premierą Dreamcastowi wielokrotnie zmieniano nazwę, między innymi były to WhiteBeard lub Katana.

- The Sega Saturn was breathing its last breath, as the battle moved on between the Nintendo 64 and Sony PlayStation. Sega of America pressured Sega of Japan to make a console people would enjoy, and soon two competitive teams raced to make a successor to the Saturn. One was named Katana, another Blackbelt. Soon, the Katana found itself superior with it being more advanced, practical, and cheaper. The Dreamcast name was given when Sega took polls amongst themselves, and the Dreamcast won. It was soon released in 1998 in Japan, where, while it commercially failed, people were begging to think anew of Sega.

Sega's final home game console, it was a sixth-generation console released in Japan on November 27, 1998 and September 9, 1999 in North America. It was rivaled by fifth-generation consoles Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and by the sixth-generation console PlayStation 2 (both the Nintendo GameCube and Xbox were not yet released during the Dreamcast's lifespan). Some of its' most notable games were Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs. Capcom, Jet Set Radio and Seaman. It was discontinued worldwide on March 31, 2001.
