- Tom Robinson (born 1 June 1950, in Cambridge UK) is an English songwriter and broadcaster probably best-known for the UK hit songs "2-4-6-8 Motorway" (1977), "(Sing If You're) Glad To Be Gay" (1978) and "War Baby" (1983). Robinson attended a Quaker school (Friends School Saffron Walden) between 1961 and 1967.
- While looking for a blue Ford Escort with DI Alex Drake at a gay pride rally, DS Ray Carling noticed Tom Robinson through a pair of binoculars among the protesting crowds. It seemed that Robinson was a leader at the protest. When Drake crushed the nearby Ford Escort with a tank, the protesters believed the police were attempting to ruin the event and revolted, causing their arrest.
- Robinson was a regular listener to Peel's Perfumed Garden show on Radio London, finding the programme an inspiration during his troubled adolescence, while he was living in a therapeutic community after the suicide attempt mentioned above. He corresponded with Peel during the DJ's early years at the BBC; a 1968 postcard from the DJ to Robinson is reproduced in Margrave Of The Marshes (ref.) and also on the Peel tribute page on the official Tom Robinson website. Later, Tom Robinson also sent Peel demo tapes of his band. In October 1979, Robinson brought back a quantity of singles from Sweden and gave these to Peel to play on the show [1]. When Alex recognised Robinson she said to him that he would "end up on Radio 6, fall in love with a woman and have two kids" though the singer dismissed the idea. DS Carling replied that she said things like that all the time. He then offered DC Chris Skelton, who had been arrested earlier to satisfy Lord Scarman, to join in their protest.
