Scholar Marz of Ripaz' The Scholar's Guide to Blades (published 1703) is work on the weapons(specifically swords) used during the years 0-1700 P.S in Mer-Caroth. The book's original title was How and Why - Blades of The Ages - A Scholar's Guide , while for the 6th edition of 1775 the title was changed to The Scholar's Guide to Blades. The book was praised by the wealthy noble families of the Empire and Marz was awarded the Insiná Aureate by the Scholars for his work and for drawing attention (and indirectly more funds) to the Scholars. He also received a prize of twenty thousand Gulden from the Emperor himself, a hefty sum even to this day.

The books first part deals on Marz' theory on the origin of swords and how the first men used them, the second part is more akin to an encyclopedia where he states all known swords and short information about them, the different imperial sword-styles, exotic swords from afar. Some swords though, are dealt with more profoundly (Reliswirr,Stapha) than others. He also set the standard for how to classify swords with his Nomen Stapha. Marz classified swords in this way, first the type of sword. There were many different types, the most common being stapha a normal sword. Then came information about the blade of the sword and last anything else of note(in general about the hilt). Example: stapha obscyra largia cu cilón pecum describing a normal style sword with a dark , tall blade with a heavy hilt. Another example: cruxstaph mellora aurum flaci cu cilón à cen describing a sword of the crux style with a slim, gold improved blade with a Carothinian style hilt.
