An International Nonproprietary Name (INN) is a unique name used to identify a pharmaceutical substance or active pharmaceutical ingredient. INNs are selected by the World Health Organization (WHO), in coordination with national authorities worldwide, and maintained on a Cumulative List of recommended INNs. INNs are generic names for pharmaceutical substances that are free from private rights of property or control.
