Hier lassen sich jedoch Mutmaßungen anstellen: Vermutlich hatte Dorwinion stets versucht, eine gewisse Neutralität zu wahren. So trieb es Handel mit den Zwergen, Elben und Menschen dieser Bereiche, schlug sich aber nie ganz auf die Seite der freien Völker, um die nahe gelegenen und weitaus mächtigeren Reiche der Ostlinge nicht gegen sich aufzubringen.
