Unfortunately, his father wouldn't let her have her son, Todd's brother, Greg Sikes and as a result, she was forced to leave him behind in Smokey Corners while she and Todd moved elsewhere. About a year or so prior to the events of "Vanished", Todd received a phone call from Greg informing him that their mother had died.

When he was very young, his mother took away from the town/small village and moved elsewhere, taking Todd with her. Unfortunately, his father wouldn't let her have her son, Todd's brother, Greg Sikes and as a result, she was forced to leave him behind in Smokey Corners while she and Todd moved elsewhere. About a year or so prior to the events of "Vanished", Todd received a phone call from Greg informing him that their mother had died. A year later and during a routine training exercise, Todd got another call from Greg asking him for help. Distraught, Todd ordered his partner, Captain Patrick Barnett to lie low for the night before he took the Cobra and left the Base, flying straight to Smokey Corners in hopes of saving Greg. But it was too late as Ritt Everett and numerous other people had set the cabin Greg was in on fire, killing him while Todd was forced to flee the scene, having been shot in the leg and coming under fire from the group. Grief-stricken over his brother's death, Todd was consumed with getting revenge to such a degree that he began his survival training to evade the dogs sent out to search for him. He eventually resurfaced when Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs arranged a plan for all the Marines except himself and his team to pull out of Smokey Corners. Willing to risk everything he had just to get revenge for his brother, Newell found himself in a stand-off with Gibbs and his team, refusing to surrender until Everett was dead which that the feud could finally end. Luckily, though, Gibbs was able to talk Newell out of his mission and Newell surrendered. It's not known what happened to him after that but it's possible that he returned to military life or was given a discharge and opted to help his dead brother's girlfriend, Daphne, Everett's daughter raise the baby she was pregnant with.
