This season was above active, with 20 depressions, which 19 of them developed, 14 of them becoming hurricanes, just shy of the 2005 record, and 10 becoming major hurricanes, shattering the previous record of 7. The season started off first with Hurricane Austin forming on June 24th, quickly reaching category 4 status before making landfall in New York City (specifically Long Island) at a borderline category 2/3 hurricane, being the fifth hurricane to directly make landfall in New York City. The season ended with Tanya, a category 1 hurricane that formed extremely north, making landfall in Newfoundland as a depression before dissipating due to cooler waters, ending the record breaking 2058 season.
