In the Pokémon fandom, the term signature move is often used to refer to a move that can only be learned by a single species or its evolutionary relatives, usually in the same evolutionary line. Most are learned by leveling up, but some can be learned through other means when no Pokémon can learn the move by leveling up. Also, some of these moves can be passed down via breeding to other Pokémon or are known by certain event Pokémon. Note that the information below may not be up to date, as edits to move distributions are still being made. Last updated: 21st June, 2015 at 10:30pm GMT.

  • Many characters have a specific skill, attack, taunt, evasive maneuver, and/or spell they use more frequently than any of their other ones; this is the character's Signature Move. Sometimes, however, a Signature Move, like a Catch Phrase, may turn out to be more an example of Never Live It Down; i.e. the character doesn't actually use the move that much, but everyone calls it their signature move, most likely because it became a Crowning Moment of Awesome. Any move or trope listed on Grandfather Clause is likely a Signature Move, as well. Examples:
  • A Signature Move is any move that is learned by only one or a few Pokémon, making it unique. Every signature move can be learned by at least 12 Pokémon: the Pokémon it is known by, Ditto when using Transform, Mew using Transform or Metronome, Smeargle by using Sketch, some by Mimic, and the rest by using Metronome.
  • Signature move is a series of Spell and Trap Cards, as well as retrained monsters, whose names reflect the attack or effect names of monsters used in the anime or manga. Their effects usually specify a full monster name, although archetype names are sometimes used. Most of these cards require the monster with the listed name to be on the field.
  • A Signature Move is the most powerful move in a character's arsenal. Cards whose names are the same as the names of attacks or effects conducted by the key monster while it was affected by that card in the anime/manga do not count as members of this series. As such, this excludes cards such as "Neos Force" and "Terra Firma Gravity".
