abstract
  • Steinway Transit Corporation (earlier Steinway Railway Company [or Corporation] then, beginning in 1922, Steinway Lines) and also known as Steinway Omnibus Corporation) was a transit operator in the northwestern part of the borough of Queens in New York City. As the Steinway Railway Company, the company was incorporated in 1892. It leased the Rikers Ave. & Sanford Point Railroad and acquired the Steinway & Hunters Point Railroad before becoming itself merged into the New York & Queens County Railway. In a 1932 reorganization, the company broke free from the NY&QC, but remained under the control of the NY&QC successor New York & Queens Transit Corp. In 1938 the company was bought by the Queensboro Bridge Railway Company, which set up a subsidiary under the Steinway Omnibus name, and converted its lines from streetcars to buses. In 1986 the NY&QT's successor Queens Transit Corp. and Steinway Transit Corp. were once again merged into one company, named Queens/Steinway Transit Corporation.
