Potions of education are rare and powerful potions which may either grant the PC a new skill or improve one of the skills the PC already possesses. Scrolls of education work in the same manner as these potions. The skill which is granted/improved is seemingly chosen randomly, although some testing indicates that several checks are made to decrease the possibility of selecting a skill which is already at level 100. If these checks fail, no new knowledge is gained. It is possible that the B/U/C status of the potions influences the number of extra checks for skill selection.

Desirability
| - Potions of education are very effective in the early game if the player is lucky to receive powerful skills which the PC lacks. These include Find weakness, Alertness, Athletics, Concentration etc. It is worth noting that potions of education are the only known method to receive Alertness as it cannot be wished for.
Potions of education remain relatively effective in the mid- and late game, as some skills may be very hard to train to level 100 .

The B/U/C status influences the increase/starting level of the selected skill with blessed/cursed potions giving the best/worst bonus.
The following messages will be generated after the PC drinks the potion:
* "You suddenly know a little about ." — the PC learned a new skill
* "You learn a little more about ." — the PC increased knowledge in one of known skills
* "You suddenly feel reminded of your mastery of the skill." — the PC did not gain any knowledge as a fully leveled skill was selected
