In 2354, he befriended a human girl, Robin Lefler, whose parents served a one-year assignment on Rimbor. (NF short story: "Lefler's Logs") Robin Lefler says Whis "isn't exactly a he," meaning he is either a thaan or a chan. It is also established that "Whis" is a shortening of his full name, though it is not revealed in either story.
