Rodriguez and his comrades were finally forced to surrender in Appomattox, Virginia. After his country's final defeat, Rodriguez returned to his childhood home in Baroyeca, Sonora. His brother Pedro, who'd been a POW for much of the war, had arrived first. Unlike Jorge, who was tired of war, Pedro was unwilling to accept the Confederacy's defeat. When Jorge met Freedom Party organizer Robert Quinn, he was suspicious of the Freedom Party leader's presence. He later learned that Quinn had surreptitiously returned to illegally keep the party going as an underground organization. Alarmed at the inevitable cost of such a plan, and knowing his brother would eagerly follow Quinn, Jorge secretly informed on Quinn to the occupying U.S. authorities. Quinn was arrested. Pedro, unaware of Jorge's action, tried to goad Jorge into action. Jorge, anguished over his decision, refused. Jorge got himself drunk at La Culebra Verde in his distress.
