Al Smith was an american politician who served as the 34th President of the United States (1929 - 1937). Generally viewed as a popular political figure, despite the fact that he was in office during the greatest economic crisis in world history. He enacted a program of public works to fight the depression, but was unable to keep unemployment down. Although the economy was beginning to recover, he was defeated in the 1932 presidential election by Herbert Hoover.
