- In combat, targets can be put into states that make them more vulnerable to certain skills. These targets can be either hostile or friendly. An example of a state is one player using a skill to put an enemy on fire, and another player using a skill that does extra damage to targets on fire.
- States are inflicted upon characters by certain spells, sometimes to positive effect (for example, Drunk), sometimes to negative (such as Weakened). States cannot be unbewitched, except by particular spells (Bamboo Milk removes Drunk).
- The state may be largely based around the Appalachia region, as hinted by the deer and forests depicted on the map in The Last Stand 2. It consists of 7 major towns or cities, which are connected by a series of roads. A river snakes through the middle of the state, emptying into a larger body of water to the east, likely the Atlantic Ocean, though this has not been confirmed. The western part of the state appears to be more rural, with the locals favoring hunting for game due to their close proximity with the forests, while the eastern part is more populous and urban, with large cities such as Union City and Jonestown making up almost 90% of the total population in the state. This is possibly a nod towards "BosNYWash", a theoretical megalopolis on the eastern U.S. coast.
- Short for State Department
- State of character is determined by several separate meters for hunger (food), thirst (water), tiredness (rest), and alcohol intoxication (sobriety).
- A State is an ongoing effect on a creature, usually in combat. The effects vary depending on which state it is, ranging from suffering damage to complete immunity to damage. The duration of a state can vary and a creature may have many different states on them at any one time, though some states can only have one copy present on that creature at the time. There are a number of common States, where many different spells can apply the same State. Usually applying the same state twice on a target will refresh the state or increase the number of stacks of the state.
- A state is a subdivision of Ostentia since the 2009 referendum on it becoming a Federal Republic. Rather than regions, which were based on traditional country lines, states follow lines more in tune with culture and population. There are thirteen states, those that are "new" generally take the name of their largest settlement or principal river.
- States were so integral to the structure of the United States of America that the concept was enshrined in the very name of the country. States were headed by governors, who had authority over at least the penal systems. They could offer paroles to prisoners. This implied that states had their own bodies of laws and that people could be punished for breaking them. (TV: The New World) Some of the states to which the Doctor or his friends and associates were known to travel included: category=US states columns=3
- A state is the term used for a (partially) self-governing federal region (a generic term is "federated state") in the United States of America and other countries (for example, the United Mexican States). Other federal nations may refer to their federated states differently (e.g. as "provinces" or "regions").

- A state is what our country is divided into, not unlike the individual slices of a wondrous American apple pie. Like slices of pie, they are not all equal in size and shape, because people aren't perfect. However, practice does make perfect, which is why the later states are more even shapes and the early states are all fucked-up. America has 52 States and still counting.

This implied that states had their own bodies of laws and that people could be punished for breaking them. (TV: The New World) The question of whether states could secede from the federal union was central to the American Civil War. After a long and bloody conflict, the answer to the question was determined to be "no". Other federal nations may refer to their federated states differently (e.g. as "provinces" or "regions"). Some Conservatives don't recognize that other countries' federated states may also be called "states" (or that some other nations may also refer to their own "united states"). On the other hand, Liberals know and acknowledge that other countries have states and are united. Some American states of note are as follows:
