Modern Kyprus was born from the Cyprus national conflict in 2008 between government forces and Greek Cypriot nationalist militia forces intent on finally driving out the Turks who occupied nearly half the island as well as establishing a new Greek Cyprus. Beginning in the Phalanx Party's base of power in the Karpass Peninsula, the militias first seized power from the government by capturing city after city. With government power, the party immediately turned their attention on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, annexing the Republic and forcing the Turks back to Turkey.
