John Whittaker Ellis (25 January 1829 – 20 September 1912), known as Sir John Whittaker Ellis, 1st Baronet from 1882 was a Conservative Party politician and Lord Mayor of London. A resident of Petersham and son of the proprietor of the Star and Garter Hotel, Richmond, Ellis became a member of the Corporation of London as an alderman for Broad Street Ward in 1872. He was Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1874-75 and Lord Mayor in 1881-82. In 1890 Richmond was incorporated as a Municipal Borough and Ellis served as first Mayor of Richmond in 1890-91. A resident of Petersham and son of the proprietor of the Star and Garter Hotel, Richmond, Ellis became a member of the Corporation of London as an alderman for Broad Street Ward in 1872. He was Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1874-75 and Lord Mayor in 1881-82. He entered the House of Commons as MP for Mid Surrey in 1884. In 1885 a redistribution of parliamentary seats occurred and Ellis was elected first Mp for the constituency of Kingston, holding the seat until 1892. In 1890 Richmond was incorporated as a Municipal Borough and Ellis served as first Mayor of Richmond in 1890-91. Acquired the site of the Castle Hotel, presenting it to the Vestry so a new municipal building could be constructed [1]. Wikipedia page [2]
