Gentoo OS can be installed on x86 (32 & 64), Power PC (32 & 64), Sparc (32 & 64), ARM, Cell BE, and others. Gentoo used to be known as Enoch. It should however be noted that you can set up the installation to compile the packages for another computer, allowing you to use extremely old hardware connected to your computer network. La configurazione dei files per l' installazione di un sistema Gentoo è però una pratica un pò "fuori dal normale" per la maggiorparte degli utenti , per questo si consiglia un' approfondita lettura del Gentoo-Handbook , il manuale di installazione e primo uso del sistema , cosa che oggi sembra ancora per molti impraticabile visti i tempi di distribuzioni "pronte all' uso" dopo appena venti minuti di installazione e che fa disprezzare Gentoo ancora ad una fetta di utenza abbastanza larga. Oggi è disponibile anche lo script "Genkernel" , che non obbliga più gli utenti ad avere una conoscenza particolarmente avanzata riguardo il kernel Linux e la sua compilazione , cosa che fino a non molto tempo fà era di obbligo su un sistema Gentoo. Il software presente nell' albero del Portage viene aggiornato spesso , alla maggiorparte degli utenti Gentoo quindi vengono messi in mano software di ultima generazione. Il portage è un potentissimo strumento che l' utente ha a disposizione che può essere naturalmente usato secondo i propri bisogni tramite l' ausilio delle "Flag USE" , locali o globali , che vanno a configurare il software come l' utente richiede. Una caratteristica particolare di un sistema Gentoo è che può essere installato partendo da un un minimo "ambiente di lavoro" , il CD minimale infatti è proprio questo , va da sè che può essere installato da un sistema GNU/Linux su altra partizione , da remoto e da un normalissimo LiveCD che abbia integrato il chroot.

* Contro : Installazione considerata troppo lunga per gli utenti non abituali , obbligo alla lettura di manuali,minime capacità di gestione di un sistema GNU/Linux.

Though Gentoo facilitates certain customisations of the system, such as "Hardened Gentoo", if you want to build NetHack with your own selection of patches, you are probably better to do it manually than to go through their "Portage" system, unless you want to generate your own ebuild (configure and build script). Perhaps a fortune cookie could read: They say that Debian and Gentoo are the best at providing current versions of packages. However, another one may read: They say that "emerge --sync" may give you a broken system. The emerge --sync command upgrades the scripts that build Gentoo packages to the latest version. This also includes the list of masked packages. Since the ebuild games-roguelike/nethack is masked, further emerge commands tend to fail, because emerge detects an installed ebuild that is masked. The problem can be solved by inserting the line games-roguelike/nethack in /etc/portage/package.unmask. This approach is superior to removing it from /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask, since the contents of /etc/portage are not overwritten by emerge --sync. This same approach is effective for Sabayon Linux as well, since it's essentially a customized Gentoo. To find out why nethack (and SLASH'EM) are masked have a look at the Gentoo bug tracker [1].

The Portage package management system implements Sun's "Write Once, Run Anywhere" motto. Portage packages are written in Python and Bash, and are not pre-compiled. They compile during installation, making the installed program architecture native. That means fast processor and at least 512 megs of memory, to get reasonable compile times. Otherwise your installations will last very long and bring your system to a crawl during the Installation. It should however be noted that you can set up the installation to compile the packages for another computer, allowing you to use extremely old hardware connected to your computer network. A similar approach is used to install applications for Gentoo on slower hardware like Raspberry Pi.
