He played Junior "B" for the St. Marys Lincolns in 1963-64 and then college hockey for the Michigan Tech Huskies in 1964-65. In 1965-66 McCann joined the Canadian National Team and played in the 1966 World Championship. He turned pro in 1966-67 with the Memphis Wings of the Central Hockey League. McCann played his entire professional career in the Detroit Red Wings' system. He was called up for a total of 43 NHL games from 1968 to 1975. He scored a total of one goal and four assists with the Wings. McCann retired in 1976.
