- Cirith Ungol, (Sindarin: Spinnenspalte), im nördlichen Teil des Schattengebirges führt in ca. 3.000 Fuß Höhe über das Morgul-Tal ins Innere Mordors. Der Pass ist auch über die Morgul-Straße erreichbar, die normalerweise von den Ork-Truppen des Dunklen Herrschers benutzt wird. Es gibt, mehr oder weniger parallel dazu, noch einen geheimen Pfad, der über steile, in den Fels gehauene Treppen zum Pass führt. Das letzte Wegstück vor der Passhöhe, liegt in einem unterirdischen Stollen, der ca. zwölf Meilen lang sein muß. Dort befindet sich Torech Ungol, das „Spinnennest“ oder Kankras Lauer (Original: Shelob's Lair). Es stank dort ungeheuerlich und eine Stockfinsternis schien selbst die Erinnerung an Licht auslöschen zu wollen. Der Pass und die Morgul-Straße werden von dem Turm von Cirith Ungol überwacht. Der Turm war von Gondor, nach dem Krieg des Letzen Bündnisses, gebaut worden: zur Abwehr von Feinden aus dem Westen, aber ebenso zur Sperrung der Grenze für die Bewohner von Mordor. Im Turm befand sich eine Orkwache unter dem Befehl von Schagrat. Am Tor waren zwei steinerne Wächter aufgestellt, die keinen Unbefugten einließen. Doch mit Hilfe von Galadriels Phiole konnte Sam, der Frodo aus dem Turm befreien wollte, die Ungeheuer bannen und das Tor passieren.thumb|109px|Cirith Ungol
