To celebrate the product launch, Build-A-Bear Workshop stores at Chicago's Navy Pier and Tyson's Corner Center in Virginia hosted walkaround Elmo appearances. The plush's retirement was announced on July 28th, 2005 with availability continuing until each store sold out. Additional merchandise included a 4-message Elmo sound chip with the messages are "Hi, it's Elmo!", "Elmo wants a hug!", "Aw, you're Elmo's friend!", and "Elmo loves you!". A plush-sized ringer tee, blue with darker blue trim and a graphic of Elmo's face on the front was also available. In 2017 the plush, now 17 inches, returned to stores.
