Three counties—Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax—became part of FDC, while the remaining counties north of the Rappahannock River formed North Virginia. Fredericksburg—located on the river became the new state's capital. The state borders the Potomac River to the north, and the Rappahannock River to the south, and West Virginia to the west.
