In respect to theology and ethics the sanctity of life refers to life being sacred or holy, and is an important Christian value. In addition to condemning the act of murder, sanctity of life rules against all suicide, abortions and so-called "mercy killings", which deny this inviolable property of life. Sanctity of life is considered a part of the "culture of life", espoused by many Christians including Pope John Paul II and President George W. Bush. Catholics and some other Christians believe that capital punishment also should be condemned because of the sanctity of life.
