Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo created the Outsiders in 1983. The original six members were Batman, Black Lightning, Halo, Geo-Force, Katana, and Metamorpho. Black Lightning and Metamorpho were established characters who had both received their own series in the past. Halo, Geo-Force, and Katana were entirely new creations. Their first appearance was in the final issue of The Brave and the Bold. This was a special insert that told a story several months into their continuity.

Their first appearance was in the final issue of The Brave and the Bold. This was a special insert that told a story several months into their continuity. They received their own series titled Batman and the Outsiders beginning several months later. In 1985 they received a second series simply titled Outsiders. Batman quit the team in 1986 and Batman and the Outsiders was renamed Adventures of the Outsiders. Adventures began reprinting stories from Outsiders six months later. Adventures of the Outsiders was canceled in 1987. Outsiders was canceled in 1988 during Millennium. Mike W. Barr began a second volume titled Outsiders in 1993, with Paul Pelletier illustrating. This series had a crossover with Zero Hour in 1994. It was canceled in 1995.
