The TIE/gt, known better as the TIE Ground Targeting, is based on the standard TIE Fighter design but with the main pod elongated to accommodate a bomb bay. The TIE/gt is the predecessor to the TIE Bomber. Perhaps its only advantage over the newer design is that it is more maneuverable than the TIE Bomber because the TIE/gt is so closely related to the TIE Fighter.

abstract
  • The TIE/gt, known better as the TIE Ground Targeting, is based on the standard TIE Fighter design but with the main pod elongated to accommodate a bomb bay. The TIE/gt is the predecessor to the TIE Bomber. Perhaps its only advantage over the newer design is that it is more maneuverable than the TIE Bomber because the TIE/gt is so closely related to the TIE Fighter. The TIE/gt is designed to be dependent on the TIE/fc starfighter, which provides precise targeting information; however, many larger structures can be destroyed even without the TIE/fc's assistance. The TIE/gt's payload can include 6 proton torpedoes, 12 concussion missiles, 18 air-deployed mines, 2 cluster bombs, or 20,000 flimsiplast leaflets when used for propaganda missions. After the introduction of the TIE Bomber, the Imperial Navy transferred the TIE/gt to outlying posts, lower-priority assignments, and the Imperial Army as support craft, as quickly as the datawork could be filed. Army resistance and legitimate lack of demand slowed down the process but, for the most part, the TIE/gt has been successfully replaced by the TIE Bomber.
