Shalaft's Syndrome was a very rare Terran illness in which the sufferer developed a hypersensitivity to sound, to the point where even a whisper could cause agony. Genetic (Y linked) in nature, it was passed down to every male in the family. Starfleet officer Jean-Luc Picard suffered from Shalaft's Syndrome, as did his clone, Shinzon, when he was very young. Eventually, Shinzon was taken to a doctor with experience in Human illnesses, and he was treated. Shinzon related this story to Captain Picard in 2379, when introducing himself to his counterpart. (Star Trek Nemesis)

  • Shalaft's Syndrome was an extremely rare human illness that caused hypersensitivity to sound. Genetically, all the male members of a family inherited it. Jean-Luc Picard had the condition, but was treated for it. Shinzon also had the condition, although it took many years before he was properly diagnosed and treated. In 2379, Beverly Crusher used Shinzon's possession of the syndrome as a factor in determining that the Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire was indeed a clone of Picard. (TNG movie & novelization: Nemesis, TNG novel: Resistance)
