This paves the way for a so called: "Golden Age", locking society into a 1950's cultural stasis. After Stalin died in 1953, the Soviet Union was faced with a big decision: whether or not to seek peace with the west. At that time, Yugoslavia had withdrawn from the bloc entirely, and talks with the other countries of the Warsaw Pact broke down, leading to the dismantling of the pact itself in 1955. Though the Soviet Union tried to talk peace, the United States refused any talks with the country, that was, until Nixon entered office in 1961. He re-approached the Soviet Union, and finally, in 1971, Nixon announced that the United States and the Soviet Union will stop all hostilities. This historic event sparked a prosperous relationship between the two countries, and in 1976, the Soviet Union announced that it would start a free market reform. They continued to say that the country will become more Democratic. This was a slap in the face against Communism to China, and they denounced the Soviet Union.
