EARLY LIFE John S. Peterson, Michael's father, had been born into a 'Mormon' family, but his parents Richard Samuel Peterson (8 August 1874 - 3 August 1925) and his mother Winnie Evelyn Stonebraker (8 April 1890 - 16 January 1919), Unexpected use of template {{1}} - see for details. but both parents passed away by the time he reached his 7th Birthday, with his father passing on that exact day. The strong Latter-Day Saint connection with the early pioneers of Utah faded as John went to live with relatives who were not active in the Mormon faith. Upon reaching his majority, John S. Peterson enlisted in the Army Air Corps, ultimately serving in the South Pacific Theater during World War II where he served on the Tokio Express of the 319th Squadron. Michael John Peterson was born in Anchorage, Alaska 21 March, 1953 to father John Stonebraker Peterson (3 August 1918 - 9 January 1977) and mother Hazel Grace Hite (18 April 1918 - 21 January 1999). His father, serving in the United States Air Force, was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base () until 1954, when he was reassigned to Charleston, South Carolina for additional training at the Navy Base. At this time, the Yukon Highway was nothing more than a dirt road traversing Canada to the Continental United States, and the family drove the distance from Anchorage to Charleston where they would reside on Brookside Drive up until the time Michael was 6 years of age. By this time, Michael was already showing interest in music, constantly playing records on a small portable record play, and singing along. By the time the family had moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, (1959), Michael was sufficiently noted for having a strong singing voice in church, as was being asked to solo for a variety of programs by the age of 8. The first experience singing solo was slightly traumatic, and Michael quickly left the chapel after that performance from a side door that was close to the speakers stand. Hiding in the back seat of the family car, his parents found him some 40 minutes later after giving up looking for him and deciding that he must have chosen to walk home which was only a short distance away inside the gate of Keesler AFB. Overcoming the initial stage fright, Michael soon accustomed to singing solos, and by the age of 10 had decided that he would most likely pursue a course of study in music to become a music teacher. JUNIOR HIGH THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL YEARS With the family being strongly connected to the US Air Force, John S. Peterson was often transferred to locations where family was unable to accompany the tour of duty. In 1963, when Michael was 12, his father was stationed in Viet Nam, so Michael and his mother Hazel moved to Layton, Utah where they lived with and older sister, Beatrice Jeanne Secrist. Jeanne was suffering from health problems that affected her mobility, so the move served the purpose of not only giving aid to his older sister, but providing a home for the year of duty Master Sergeant J.S. Peterson would be on duty in Viet Nam. Michael attended Vae View Elementary School which was walking distance from the house, and attended the 13th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Layton.
