- The Sundering was a cataclysmic civil war in the early history of the Elves.
- The Sundering traces back to Malekith, son of the first Phoenix King Aenarion and an Elven enchantress called Morathi, and was the successor to the throne of Ulthuan by birthright. Following Aenarion's death, however, the ruling Council of Princes decided that Malekith was too impetuous and warlike, as Aenarion had led the Elves through a great war and the population was extremely weary of conflict. They declared Malekith to be unfit to rule, and instead chose Bel Shanaar of Tiranoc as the next Phoenix King. Although this decision caused controversies and outrage among Malekith's supporters and his mother, Malekith accepted Bel Shanaar. Malekith was made High General and supreme commander of the armies. During his time in the army, Malekith wandered the world, and with his mother's guidance, started experimenting with Dark Magic. By then, Malekith became discontented with Elf society that had grown complacent and wanted the Elves to become a war-like people to face the ever-growing menace from the forces of Chaos. Compounded with his critical views was his investigation into the Cult of Pleasure, a society of poets and artists that was very popular with the High Elf elite, being a front for a Chaos cult of Slaanesh that had taken root among the Elves. Malekith took advantage of his discovery to eliminate his political enemies, falsely accusing them as Chaos cultists and executing them without trial. In truth, the Cult of Pleasure was founded by Malekith's mother, and had marshalled an army from the cult to complete Malekith's coup.
- The Sundering is the magical spell that Asheron Realaidain and his surviving adepts cast to send the remaining Yalaini into Portal Space after their world was overrun by the Olthoi. This event took place in HE 647, and marked the end of the Third Age of Lore.
- The Sundering is the third book of the War of the Ancients Trilogy novels. This book describes the last events in the new timeline of the War of the Ancients, and focuses specifically on the events leading up to the Great Sundering of Azeroth; the great explosion that ripped the continents of Azeroth apart and created the continents we see today.
- The Sundering was an event that occurred a very long time ago, as the result of the final great working by The Bastard and his compatriots that attempted to destroy the Sidhe for all time. While failing to utterly destroy the Nine Queens of Faerie, it did splinter their souls. The fragments of Aunghadhail's soul have been reassembling themselves over the ages. Fey is the final step in the reassembly. In the Sundering, the space-time continuum itself was shattered, leaving chaotically-reassembled pieces in its wake: "Long ago, the world was whole. Magic was everywhere. It was the time of the Five-Fold Courts, but it was also the beginning of the rise of man." She frowned deeply. "Then came the Bastard, the evil one. He shattered the land, broke the Five-Fold Courts, and burned the sacred trees that had brought magic to the land. He scattered the Peoples as well." Circe frowned. "The breaking of Pangea happened millions of years before the rise of humans," she said, confused. Wakan Tanka sighed. "At the Sundering, time itself was shattered. What you 'know' as the history of the world is a haphazard ordering of what Wihakayda calls space-time, shattered and strewn about through time itself." She shook her head sadly. "What is now are merely scattered fragments of what was before." "Are you saying that ... our history ... isn't real?" Dr. Tenent asked hesitantly. "It is real - to you. It is not real to me, nor to Aunghadhail, nor to any of the surviving spirits of the Sundering."
- The Sundering is Chapter III of the third part, New Days, of the Chronicles of Alandor, that speaks of the history of Alandor.
