Doherty played four years at Southern New Hampshire University Penmen, which is part of the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Northeast Hockey League of the NCAA. Doherty put up 47 points, including 26 goals and 21 assists in 28 games with the Penmen in 2004-05. He also served as team captain for the Penmen his senior year. Over his four seasons skating for Southern New Hampshire University, he amassed a total of 102 points, which includes 56 goals and 46 assists.
