The company first produced crossword puzzle books, and has since become one of largest publishing companies in the world, publishing 1900 titles annually, under their many imprints. Because of contract trouble, in 1979 the Stratemeyer Syndicate switched publishers for The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and several other series to Simon & Schsuter, which led to the 1979/1980 court case between the Stratemeyer Syndicate and Grosset & Dunlap. In the end Simon & Schuster was allowed to keep the publishing contract for The Hardy Boys and all other Stratemeyer Syndicate series that they had agreed to print and distribute in 1979, because the courts had recognized The Stratemeyer Syndicate as the copyright owners of the works. In 1984 Simon & Schuster bought out the Stratemeyer Syndicate and gained complete control over all things dealing with any Syndicate series. But Simon & Schuster was still obligated by the 1980 court decision to allow Grosset & Dunlap to continue publishing the books that they had already published.
