Because they were well known to the French in French Indochina and were allied with the French against Japanese occupation of French Indochina. When the Vietnam War started, they were recruited and drafted in to fight against the North Vietnamese and disrupt the Ho Chi Minh trail under General Vang Pao who served under the Royal Lao Army and the American C.I.A. They eventually retreated after the Americans left at the hands of the Communist forces. To this day, the Hmong are still being massacred by the current Lao government with aid of Vietnamese soldiers for their aids to the American troop.
