abstract
  • After a strong start to the 2009-10 campaign, Rovers traveled to Norwich City's Carrow Road ground in a buoyant mood following a last gasp winner at Southampton earlier in the week earning a 3–2 victory and maintaining third place in League One. The long journey east proved to be a step too far for the Pirates however, and they slumped to their biggest defeat of the season so far. The Norwich squad included two ex-Gas men on the bench in Fraser Forster, who had spent the beginning of the season on loan at Rovers from Newcastle United, and Bristolian Jamie Cureton who made a cameo appearance on the pitch late in the game. Manager Paul Trollope named an unchanged side from the win at St. Mary's, but they got off to a bad start, conceding the first goal after just nine minutes, Chris Martin putting the ball in the back of the net. Rovers grabbed an equaliser on the 26 minute mark thanks to a Jeff Hughes penalty, but Norwich were back in the lead five minutes later when Wes Hoolahan converted a spot kick. Grant Holt scored Norwich's third and fourth goals before half time, but Rovers managed to stem the tide following the break. Rovers old boy Jamie Cureton had the final say however, scoring Norwich's fifth and putting the final nail in the Rovers coffin in the third minute of injury time at the end of the match. As a former Rovers player however, Cureton did not celebrate his goal out of respect for the club.
