According to the original source material, even where weaponry is up to the pre-war standard, the ammunition used is commonly not - the Dynasty has improvised only with shrapnel shells. However, the design intended to be referred to by the source material might have acctually have been even more low-tech canister shot. Newtypes contrast with the Oldtype tanks, which are more or less maintained pre-war tanks. The Black Guard is the only formation to employ a sizeable number of maintained Oldtype tanks. In some cases, they are also old tanks with severe modifications, or salvaged tank hulls, providing borderline examples between Newtype and Oldtype tanks. The Newtype carries an anomaly device, which is usually used to counter ballistic threats. When activated, incoming projectiles are nullified and the tank takes a fixed amount of damage instead. The crew also takes a considerable amount of slow-regenerating mental damage, which increases if the Mind stat is already low, making repeated use in a short timespan dangerous.
