Officer Cadets are still in the academy, learning what it takes to be an officer. They may during their time at the Academy serve temporarily on a ship in the form of field training. It is rare - but not unheard of - for a cadet at the Academy to be granted a temporary commission as an ensign. This, however, is only done in instances of truly outstanding grades.

- Officer Cadet is a rank held by military and merchant navy cadets during their training to become commissioned officers amd Merchant Navy Officers, respectively. The term Officer Trainee is used interchangeably in some countries. Some countries refer to naval officer cadets as midshipmen, although in other countries this means something slightly different. In the United Kingdom, the rank is also used by members of University Officer Training Corps and University Air Squadrons who are not actually training to become officers
