abstract
  • Paddy was an Irish barman at The Red Lion during Charlie Moffitt's disastrous turn as comic there in May 1965. Paddy offered Charlie some kind (and possibly insincere) words of support before opening time one day, calling him the funniest comic they'd ever had and blaming his harsh reception on a tough audience. That evening, Len Fairclough and Stan Ogden came to the Red Lion to fetch Charlie home to Coronation Street. Charlie had run away after misplacing £25 of a customer's money from his job as an insurance salesman. After establishing that Len and Stan weren't from the Lord's Day Observance Society (with it being a Sunday), Paddy told the men that Charlie was due on stage imminently. He later gave the game away when Len and Stan, having witnessed Charlie's dreadful turn in full, pretended that they'd walked in just as he'd finished to save him from embarrassment. Credited as "Paddy - Barman".
