The 2014 Senate elections occurred during the midterm election of President Barack Obama's second term in office. Like the year before there were a high number of vulnerable Democrats up for re-election in states that were traditionally Republican. Without the presidential coattails they rode in on in 2008, and due to the president's controversial proposals on gun control most of these Democrats ended up losing, and the Republican party regained control of the senate.
