Nelson heckling, or 'riffing', films in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a TV show in which Nelson was the head writer and, later, host. The RiffTrax are sold online where users can purchase and download the commentaries to play synchronously with their DVD of the film. Al participated in the 2008 Rifftrax commentary for the film "Jurassic Park", and he joined the Rifftrax crew in their riffing of the short "Three Magic Words" during the live Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza.

Originally showcasing only Mike, he was later joined by MST3K alumni such as Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, as well as other noted internet personalities. As of 2017, full RiffTrax commentaries always feature Mike, Kevin and Bill.
