Bayushi Ujiro was the Scorpion Clan Champion during the time period of the Crane Clan writer Kakita Ryoku, and was invited to the winter court she held which was later described in her novel Winter. In the novel, during a discussion about was the most important virtue, Ujiro challenged the Champions of Crab, Lion and Unicorn, Hida Junuro, Akodo Kyuinjin and Shinjo Yuni respectively, to a competition of loyalty in order to check how loyal their yojimbo were. The competition consisted of each of them calling their yojimbo and giving them an order that Ujiro would first give his own yojimbo. To the terror of all gathered in the room, Ujiro's order to his yojimbo was to kill him. Bayushi Shunsen, Ujiro's yojimbo, killed his lord without hesitation, and then ended his own life.
